Corporate Data Strategy: National Lottery Heritage Fund
The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest dedicated funder of heritage in the UK. They distribute National Lottery grants from £3,000 to £5million and over, funding projects that sustain and transform the UK’s heritage.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund came to us because they wanted to develop their ability to respond to enquiries regarding their work and the effectiveness of their funds. Like many organisations, they hold a huge amount of data across multiple internal systems and wanted to develop an overarching Management Information System that would allow organisation and grant wide interrogation.
We worked with their teams to carry out a series of workshops identifying what data exists, where it is held, who manages it, the processes around gathering and management and then considering what they need it to do now and into the future. Having completed the workshops, we were able to work with their internal IT teams and data analysts to develop a data architecture plan, identifying the links required and ensuring smooth flow of data between systems whilst maintaining the correct hierarchy.
Deriving Value from Data
Most organisations collate huge volumes of data on a daily basis, but few are truly able to leverage benefit from it. From individual donor information to geographic, financial and operational data points around funded projects, data held in disparate systems across the business will often have significant yet unnecessary overlap. Developing a corporate data strategy helps organisations understand more of the hierarchy, storage, utilisation and ownership of data held.
Breaking Down Data Silos
The biggest hurdles to generating tangible benefit from organisational data are normally visibility and connectivity. Departments and teams end up working in silos, collating the data they need to deliver their specific remit with limited awareness of the fact that other teams may be holding the same data for another purpose elsewhere. When external stakeholders generate enquiries, both effort and time are duplicated seeking the answers.
Generating Value and Identifying Gaps
Our experts help organisations and charities reveal the true depth and value of the data held within the enterprise, allowing them to put it to work. Having researched and mapped the data, any emerging gaps can be identified, and management information systems developed to draw together data for the purpose of driving organisational improvements, reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Intouch Business – The Data Experts
We have developed corporate data strategies for a number of large NGOs and Federations and as a result we have built a deep understanding of how they are structured – often with disparate, diverse and geographically spread networks of offices, databases and systems. This knowledge and experience means we not only know how to help identify and streamline data management processes but we can do so with empathy.
